Professor Guillermo Alvarez’s approach to Statistics and Distance Education

I used my confinement during the Covid-19 crisis to create this website. Now students and professors can use it to learn or teach Introductory Statistics either on-campus or online.

Welcome to Standard Statistics, the web site that delivers a comprehensive course on Introductory Statistics, including online lessons, handouts, answer keys, applets and a pedagogy that guarantees significant learning.

If you are a student willing to learn or a professor seeking help to deliver an Introductory Statistics course, you have here a great ally. Enjoy my materials and feel free to contact me if you have any question.

6 Differentiators of Standard Statistics
A comprehensive course on Introductory Statistics
Comprehensive

It offers a course that covers most, if not all, of the student learning outcomes (SLOs) in a common Intro Stats course, from collecting the data to inferential statistics and decision making. In particular, it has been influenced by the requirements of the California Higher Education System (UC, CSU and CCC).

Simplicity, Clarity, Unity
Unity, Clarity, Simplicity

It is divided in 11 chapters that carry the student through the whole journey of Statistics. Each chapter is introduced as a logical continuation of the previous one and the student is made aware of what s/he is learning in each moment and how it relates to the other contents.

Depth and Friendliness
Well Balanced

It balances depth of concept with a friendly approach. It should develop scientific maturity and good practices in the students while keeping them engaged with stimulating questions and scenarios. The concepts are introduced as we go over exercises with the help of “quick questions for quick minds”, color codes and other pedagogical devices.

High quality of sound and image
Audiovisual Emphasis

The lessons are carefully scripted, recorded and edited to teach in around 17 minutes what otherwise could take an hour. Image and sound are recorded at a high quality and manually generated captions are available for impaired students.

Simplified table of contents
Very Concise

Each chapter is usually summarized in a 2-page handout with exercises, solutions and the required vocabulary. No fluff! The blank copies of those handouts are available for students or instructors to download, print and use in class or while taking the online lessons.

Same order as many books
Same order as many books

The course follows the same order of contents as many books commonly used at higher education. Indeed, my 6-Step Significant Learning Methodology for Distance Education (6SSLMDE) implies the use of a text book together with my handouts and online lessons.

Also available for credit
I am currently teaching this course at my college.

If you want to enroll in this course at college to receive official academic credit for your learning, feel free to contact me. As a regular student of mine, you will have access to students’ discussions, homework, exams, office hours… All entirely online.

Some students’ statements:

“Mr. Alvarez communicates extremely well with thorough assignment explanations and videos for lessons that make you feel like you are in class with him.”

[Mr. Alvarez] “does a very good job explaining the material and providing helpful resources. The course is organized and set up for students to learn and succeed, rather than drown them in unnecessary reading and work.”

“Our professor is particularly good at delivering material that can be complex and difficult to understand even in a traditional classroom setting in a clear, cohesive, and understandable way in our class”.

“I like his online classes and instructions for each module. He is fast and clear when giving the class which I like because it is not boring and long”.

“He has everything very well organized”.

The tools I offer for you to learn or teach Introductory Statistics:
A bit about myself:

I have been lucky enough to have lived and traveled all along the world learning about sciences, humanities and people. In Europe I studied Mathematics and Cinema and then I moved to Mexico, where I studied Business Administration while working in some of the finest universities and in the private sector. Then I moved to California, where I currently live and work as a full-time professor.

Among my hobbies, I would certainly count cinema and literature. I also enjoy hiking and dancing.

I have created this website to bring my lessons beyond the bourders of my regular classes and to provide support to students and instructors during this Covid-19 pandemic and confinement.
